Watch the VPN indicator

Android shows a VPN indicator when a VPN tunnel is active. If the indicator is gone, check the app before assuming the VPN is still connected.

Review app permissions

Only grant app permissions that make sense for the app you are using. A VPN app normally needs VPN permission, but unrelated apps should not receive sensitive permissions without a clear reason.
